The Oak Room at the Harvard Club had twelve-foot ceilings and walls lined with oil portraits of past university presidents.

A deep red carpet muffled the sound of footsteps, making the space feel solemn and oppressive.

I arrived thirty minutes early. Arthur was already at our table, flanked by two junior associates. Across the long table, Julian’s seat was still empty.

The press section was set up ten feet away. The three reporters were already arranging their recording devices. I recognized Lisa from The New York Times—she had been nominated for a Pulitzer for her reporting on the #MeToo movement.
