The Sterling Paris office was in a 19th-century building at the end of the Champs-Élysées.
Marble staircases, high ceilings, and modern art on the walls—it looked more like a gallery than a law firm.
My office was on the fifth floor, with a window overlooking the Arc de Triomphe. A nameplate was already on the desk: HARPER VANCE, CO-HEAD OF EUROPEAN M&A.
Next to it was a crystal paperweight with a dried rose preserved inside.
