I stood outside the door, filled with helplessness and despair.
Just then, my phone rang. It was Mark.
I answered frantically, "Mark! Why isn't David answering you?"
Mark's voice was frantic. "Sarah, I just signed Olivia's DNR. The doctor...the doctor said the baby doesn't have a heartbeat anymore. They have to do the surgery to save her now. Come back!"
I felt faint.
I didn't care about dignity. I used all my strength to slam on Ashley's door, yelling, "David! Come out! Olivia's in trouble! If you don't go to the hospital, you'll regret it forever!"
There was no answer. I stood there, hearing Ashley's muffled sobs, and felt completely lost.
I couldn't wait anymore. I headed back to the hospital.
When I stumbled into the operating room, the doctor gave me a heavy, hopeless nod.
Their eyes held a deep sadness and weariness. "The patient lost too much blood, and the delay in treatment was too long... We did everything we could, but...the family can come in and say their last goodbyes."
That sentence was like a thunderbolt. Mark lost all his strength and collapsed on the floor. Tears streamed from his eyes.
I felt like my legs were made of lead, my heart filled with grief. I fought back my tears and, along with Mark, stepped through the door.
Inside the operating room, Olivia was lying still on the cold operating table, her face as pale as a sheet. Her life was fading.
Mark rushed to her side, tears flowing. "Olivia, please wake up. I can't live without you..." His voice was full of sorrow.
Olivia used her last strength and opened her heavy eyelids, her voice a whisper. "Honey, I'm sorry...I was reckless. I shouldn't have driven alone...I didn't protect our baby..."
Tears streamed from her eyes.
She looked at me, looked behind me, and her eyes held a complex emotion. She asked softly, "Sarah...where's my brother? Is he...with Ashley again?"
My throat tightened, and I struggled to answer. I fought back my tears. "Olivia, don't think about it. Your brother...he'll be here soon...you have to hold on..."
Olivia seemed to see through my lies. She gripped my hand tighter. "Sarah, I've always thought of you as my sister. David made a mistake. If you can't forgive him, I hope you find your own happiness..."
My tears finally overflowed. I squeezed her hand and choked back my sobs. "Olivia, you have to be strong. Your life is still long. There's a lot of happiness out there..."
But before I finished, Olivia's hand went limp, and her eyes closed forever.
The world seemed to stop.
