I gripped my phone tightly, my heart weighed down by a sense of helplessness and despair.
I knew that only David could save Olivia.
The heavy responsibility felt like a boulder on my shoulders. I had to do everything I could to get him to the hospital quickly!
Just then, my brother-in-law, Mark, arrived at the hospital. His face was etched with worry.
After hearing the doctor's update on Olivia's condition, he broke down. He fell to his knees, covering his eyes with his hands, tears streaming through his fingers.
Then, he frantically started calling David, but he only heard the cold voicemail.
Mark's voice trembled, barely audible through his tears. "Sarah, what are we going to do? We need to get David here to save Olivia! She's his sister!"
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay calm.
I patted Mark's shoulder gently, trying to comfort him. "Mark, you have to stay strong. Stay here with Olivia. I'll go find David. Call me if anything happens."
I tried to remember where David had mentioned Ashley's new place was. I called a cab and headed there.
The scenery blurred past outside the car window, and my only thought was to find David as quickly as possible!
Finally, I was outside the apartment complex. It wasn't too far, thankfully.
I looked around, not knowing exactly which building Ashley lived in. I had to find David's car.
After searching, I finally spotted David's car in front of building 3.
I saw a moving van getting ready to leave. I asked the movers which apartment they'd just finished and then ran up the stairs to Ashley's apartment.
When I knocked on Ashley's door, I found David in the living room, wiping his hair with a towel.
The sight ignited a rage inside me that I wanted to tear the apartment apart.
But I knew Olivia was at the hospital, waiting for her brother to save her. I couldn't lose control here.
Ashley was standing nearby, putting on an act of weakness. "Sarah, don't get the wrong idea. David helped me move, so he took a shower..."
I glared at her, pushed past her, and threw the clothes on the couch at David. "Get dressed and come with me! Olivia needs you at the hospital!"
David seemed uninterested. He tossed the clothes aside. "Sarah, you followed me here? When Ashley's car broke down, you had Olivia call me, and then you made out like Olivia was feeling unwell. Now you're doing it again. Do you think I'm going to fall for that?"
I shouted, losing my patience, "David! Olivia's in mortal danger! You're her brother. Aren't you going to do anything to help?"
David, seeing my determination, hesitated.
Ashley chimed in, still acting innocent, "Yeah, Sarah. However much you hate me, you can't mess around with Olivia's life. If Olivia was really in danger, why didn't her husband call David?"
I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm.
I knew it wasn't time for an argument. I needed David to know how serious this was.
I went back to David, grabbing his arm. "David, if you don't trust me, call Mark. He's not going to play around with his wife and child's lives!"
David's eyes were filled with doubt. He took his phone out of his pocket, unlocked it, and called Mark.
But the phone only rang.
As the seconds ticked by, David's expression grew grim. He looked at me, a dark shadow in his eyes.
My anxiety increased.
Suddenly, there was a shattering sound from the kitchen, followed by Ashley's scream.
David's face changed. He threw his phone and rushed into the kitchen.
Ashley was on the floor, clutching a broken glass, her fingers red from the hot water.
David quickly picked up Ashley and carried her from the kitchen.
I picked up David's phone. I tried to call Mark again, but David grabbed the phone, smashing it against the wall. It shattered into pieces.
"Sarah! Stop pretending!" David roared, "I know you have a problem with Ashley, but I'm just helping an old friend! If you hate it so much, we can just get a divorce!"
I tried to explain, but David wouldn't listen. He grabbed my arm and pushed me out the door.
