Chapter 1

My sister-in-law was in labor, and my husband, the only OB/GYN I knew, was the only one who could save her.

At the last moment, I called my husband, but his first love answered.

"Hey, it's Brooke. David's sleeping. Can I have him call you back later?"

I was fuming. "Olivia's in labor! Tell him to get here now!"

But then I heard David's annoyed voice in the background. "Why do you always have to bother me when I'm helping Ashley?"

The phone hung up, and when I called back, it went straight to voicemail.

In the end, my sister-in-law and the baby both died.

And it was David's first love who caused the whole damn thing!

"Ms. Green," the doctor said, his voice grave, "Olivia's condition is very serious. The baby's positioned wrong, and on top of that, she suffered some sort of trauma. She's bleeding significantly. Considering Dr. David was handling all the prenatal care, he knows Olivia and the baby's situation best. If he could be here to deliver the baby, we might be able to save both of their lives."

Each word the doctor spoke hit me like a hammer. My legs were shaky, but I couldn't back down.

The situation was dire. My brother-in-law, Mark, was rushing to the hospital. The only person who could help Olivia was me.

I had to contact David immediately and get him to the hospital.

With trembling hands, I dialed David's number. A strange female voice answered, "Hello? Who is this?"

My anger flared. "This is David's wife! Who are you, and why do you have his phone?"

The woman sounded startled. She replied, in a soft voice, "Oh, it's Ashley. David worked a late shift and is resting. If it's not urgent, maybe you could call back later?"

Her tone was overly familiar, as if she was David's wife.

Ashley was David's first love. David would always go out of his way to help her, and we'd fought about it many times.

Fighting back my anger, I said, "Ashley, put David on the phone. I need to speak to him urgently."

Before Ashley could respond, David snatched the phone, his voice impatient. "Sarah! What's going on now? Why do you always have to make a fuss whenever I'm doing something for Ashley?"

I knew it wasn't the time for an argument. "David! Olivia's in labor! She's in a bad way, and she needs you at the hospital now!"

But David's voice grew colder and angrier. "Sarah, are you serious? I was just helping Ashley move some stuff, and now you're using Olivia to threaten me? Are you out of your mind?"

I started to explain, but then I heard something shatter on the other end of the line, followed by Ashley's carefully stifled sobs. "David..."

David's voice became concerned and frantic. "Ashley! What happened?"

He turned to me and snapped, "Sarah! Olivia was fine when I left! What's wrong with you? Wait until I get home, and we'll talk!"

He hung up.

I called back, and the phone went straight to voicemail. The dial tone felt like a dagger in my heart.
