When Sebastian first came back to the States, my father-in-law had Josie pick him up from the airport personally.
Then he was given a job at the company, instantly becoming a general manager.
I'd been working at that company for years and was still just a low-level employee, a total nobody.
That was a rule Josie's dad set down years ago.
He said he couldn't have me damaging the family's reputation or corrupting the company culture.
I knew what he really meant.
He was embarrassed by me.
But it was fine. I accepted it. Not a single word of complaint.
At Sebastian's welcome-home dinner, Josie walked in and gave him a hug and a kiss, right on the lips.
I was just frozen on the spot.
She explained it was just a habit from her Western education growing up. A little kiss was nothing. In her eyes, Sebastian was her real brother.
I believed her.
I just figured our families had different backgrounds. If I made a fuss, I'd just be embarrassing Josie.
But I didn't see the burning desire in Sebastian's eyes.
After that, they were inseparable.
Always together, always laughing.
They'd even hang out after work, often not coming home until the middle of the night.
I could tolerate all of that.
But refusing to have a baby with me, deliberately scheduling business trips during her fertile window, yet willing to go through the pain of IVF just to have Sebastian's child…
That, I couldn't tolerate.
The moment I figured out what they were doing at that clinic, any feelings I had for her died.
She killed them with her own hands.
I stared at the ceiling until midnight, then finally fell asleep and didn't wake up until noon the next day.
It was Josie, pounding on the door, who woke me.
"I'm hungry! Where's lunch? Why are you still sleeping? And the house is a mess, what have you been doing?"
I cracked a smile, rolled over, and ignored her.
After we got married, I made sure she never even had to know which way the kitchen door opened.
I thought it was a sign of my love.
Now I just feel like a joke.
"Get up! Go make something to eat!"
Josie came over and started shaking me, like I was some useful servant.
Always at her beck and call. Use me when it's convenient, toss me aside when it's not.
Yeah, that's about right.
"Make it yourself. You're not my wife anymore."
I got out of bed, glanced at her lightly made-up face, and walked out after that cold statement.
Josie's patience finally snapped. She yelled furiously:
"Leo, what the hell is your problem? If I'm not your wife, who is? Is this ever going to end? Are you just trying to make my life difficult?"
"I'm just telling you the truth."
"You!"
"The moment you decided you wanted to have Sebastian's baby, you stopped being my wife. It's over."
A flash of panic crossed Josie's face before she quickly suppressed it.
"Did you hear some stupid rumor?"
"I saw it with my own eyes."
I shook my head and started to leave, not wanting to hear any of her excuses.
Josie chased after me, grabbing my arm a few times, but I didn't stop.
Her rich-girl temper flared.
"I was just borrowing one of his sperm cells! I wanted a child with superior genes! What's so wrong with that?"
"Is biology really that important? The baby will still call you Dad."
"It's not like I cheated on you."
