The end of love: The beginning of freedom

Chapter 2

I lay on the guest room bed, my eyes wide open, unable to sleep.

My mind kept drifting back to a summer, many years ago…

That was the summer I met Josie by accident.

I was back home in the mountains, picking wild huckleberries to save up for college tuition.

Two beautiful young women were up on the big rock at the scenic overlook, taking pictures.

A sudden gust of wind blew up.

The girls panicked, slipped, and started falling toward the cliff edge.

I was nearby and saw what was happening. I lunged, grabbing one of them.

More than half my body was hanging over the edge of the cliff.

My arm was a bloody mess, but I managed to pull her back to safety.

The other girl… the search and rescue team found what was left of her days later.

At the hospital, the doctor told me with a grave face that my arm was severely damaged.

He said it wouldn't just leave a scar, but it would also affect its function for the rest of my life.

Basically, I was disabled.

The girl I saved was in the room at the time.

It was only later that I learned her name was Josie.

Three years went by. I graduated from college and immediately found myself unemployed.

Because of the injury to my arm and my less-than-practical major, I hit a brick wall for nearly two months.

Then, out of the blue, I was hired by a major corporation.

I thought it was a miracle from heaven.

But on my first day of work, I saw Josie, and I saw her father, the CEO.

It turned out my guardian angel wasn't from heaven. It was her.

I didn't refuse her way of repaying the favor.

Plus, she was interning at her dad's company at the time. We spent a lot of time together, feelings grew, and we started dating.

Her father didn't approve.

He thought we weren't from the same world, that I wasn't in their league.

Things got really tense.

Finally, Josie laid down an ultimatum: either we get married now, or she'd get pregnant first. They could choose.

Her dad, holding his nose, chose to accept me as his son-in-law, a son-in-law he clearly despised.

For years of marriage, even though I was never accepted by her family and was constantly looked down on, I never said a word of complaint.

Whatever Josie wanted, I gave her. Whatever she asked, I did.

I could put up with her little tantrums and her big ones.

Rubbing her feet was nothing. I did it almost every day.

I thought we could live like this forever.

My only wish was to finally have a child.

That's why I timed my flight with her ovulation and her business trip, wanting to give her a surprise.

It was a surprise, all right.

Just not a happy one.

The moment her "brother" Sebastian showed up with her at that clinic, it turned into a nightmare.
