Because I was so distraught, I rushed out of the office and sat on the floor outside, weeping.
Olivia followed.
“Dr. Campbell, are you okay?”
She offered me a tissue.
“Here, wipe your face…”
Before she could finish, her phone rang. The name on the screen read "Honey."
She beamed and answered.
“Sweetheart, I've sent the driver to pick you up.”
Ethan’s voice, smooth and deep, filled the air. It was the same voice as my Ethan.
“Okay, I’ll be right down.”
After hanging up, Olivia said goodbye and left.
The tissue she gave me was crumpled in my hand, and I had dug my nails into it.
Then, I caught a whiff of a delicate fragrance.
It was the scent of jasmine.
It was the same scented paper Ethan always used.
I took a leave of absence and went home.
I texted Ethan, telling him to come home immediately.
He replied instantly: “On my way.”
His office was close to our place, and he was back in twenty minutes.
He looked as handsome as ever, in a well-cut suit.
“What’s wrong, Evelyn?”
“Is something the matter?”
He wrapped his arms around me the moment he walked in.
He was his usual gentle self.
He had been gentle with me for six years.
My friends always said that Ethan, who was ruthless in the business world, was only tender with me.
But today, I found out that his gentleness was all an act.
“Ethan, let’s get a divorce.”
As soon as the words left my mouth, I realized I’d said the wrong thing.
Because Ethan never married me.
We’d just had a ceremony back then.
And we’d spent six years together.
Living with him for six years, I felt like it had been a lifetime.
So long that I forgot that we weren't actually married, I even thought we were an old married couple.
Now I realized that I was the other woman.
“Why are you saying something like that?”
He quickly knelt in front of me, his dark eyes fixed on mine.
“What happened, Evelyn? Tell me, please?”
My throat tightened, and I choked out, “Your wife came to see me for a checkup today.”
“She showed me pictures of you two over the years.”
“She said you’ve been married for seven years.”
At that, his pupils widened, and his body stiffened.
He was always so calm and collected.
I had never seen him like this before.
It seemed that Ethan and Olivia really had been married for seven years.
