I met a pregnant woman at the hospital.
As we chatted, she gushed about her husband, a Mr. Ethan Sterling, the CEO of a well-known company.
Funny thing was, my husband was also named Ethan Sterling, and he was a CEO, too.
Later, I asked Ethan for a divorce.
That's when it hit me: he never even married me.
Turns out, I was the other woman.
...
“My husband, Ethan Sterling, is the CEO of a huge company. He adores me! When we got hitched, he bought me a whole damn island!”
The beautiful woman in front of me was positively glowing.
She’d been talking about how great her husband was since she walked in.
I asked her his name, and that’s when she told me.
And I froze.
Funny. My husband was also Ethan Sterling, the CEO of a huge company.
Could we… be sharing the same husband?
The thought sent a chill down my spine.
“Dr. Campbell, is something wrong? Did the scans come back bad?”
The woman's voice snapped me back to reality.
I finally looked at her ultrasound results.
Olivia Hayes, the fetus was eight weeks along and looked perfectly healthy.
“Everything’s fine,” I stammered, my hands trembling uncontrollably.
“The baby’s perfectly healthy.”
“Ms. Hayes, would you mind showing me a picture of you and your husband?”
She breathed a sigh of relief, a wide smile on her face. “Of course!”
She opened her phone and showed me a photo of her cuddled up with Ethan, eating ice cream.
“This was the first picture we ever took together.”
Then she swiped to another one.
“This was when we went to Paris.”
It was a picture of them kissing in front of the Eiffel Tower.
She was swiping quickly, and I could see there were more, including what looked like wedding photos.
“We’ve been married for seven years!”
I slammed her phone shut.
“No… no need to see more.”
Tears spilled down my face, and I lost it completely.
I clutched my chest, and the pain was unbearable. I couldn't speak.
