Hearing that Julian shared a similar fate, a wave of sympathy washed over Milo. He couldn't help but offer some comfort.
"I've been there. But it's okay, everything gets better once the divorce is final. Helena will definitely help you get through this."
*Yes, she already helped with the hardest part—the signature.*
Julian nodded, playing along.
"I heard she handled your case too. I bet she was very dedicated."
A bashful look appeared on Milo's face, and his voice became lighter.
"Oh yeah, Helena was a huge help. She was gathering evidence to sue my ex-wife and at the same time, she was always by my side, protecting me. If she hadn't shown up with bodyguards, I might have actually been killed by that psycho ex of mine."
Watching him recall these traumatic events with a look of pure bliss, Julian was momentarily stunned. An inappropriate question slipped out.
"Are you in love with Helena?"
The question made Milo freeze. He struggled for a long time before finally stammering out an answer.
"I... I don't know. At first, I just saw her as an older sister. She used to take me out all the time, took care of me, bought me tons of gifts. When I got bullied in school, she'd be the one to fight for me, getting all bruised up. When she found out I was getting divorced, she came to me and offered to help. It was only later that my sister told me... Helena has secretly been in love with me for a very long time..."
"She's such an ice queen, a total goddess. I can't believe she'd have a secret crush. I don't even know how she fell for me."
Listening to him ramble on about the past, Julian felt a complex mix of emotions.
From Milo's lips, he was learning about a completely different Helena than the one he knew.
So, she wasn't naturally cold, she just didn't like him. She wasn't passive about everything, he just wasn't the one who could ignite her passion.
It was a shame he had fallen so deep, and realized it so late, wasting so many years on her.
Lost in his memories, Milo didn't notice the profound look on Julian's face.
After their talk, he already considered Julian a confidant. He gathered his courage and posed the question that had been weighing on his mind to this man he had only met a few times.
"Julian... what do you think of Helena?"
Julian understood the real meaning behind Milo's question.
He looked up at the apartment that was soon to be empty and answered honestly.
"I've known her for ten years. But it was only recently that I realized I don't know her at all. So, I'm afraid I can't really answer your question. But I can tell you this: I've never seen her love someone as much as she loves you."
Milo nodded thoughtfully, a sense of peace settling over him.
As the sun began to set, he grabbed Julian's arm, insisting he join them for dinner.
Helena, who had just come downstairs, froze at the suggestion, the reluctance written all over her face.
Seeing her expression, Julian curved his lips into a faint smile and declined the invitation.
"I have something to take care of tonight. I won't intrude."
Without giving the siblings a chance to react, Helena grabbed Julian's arm and steered him to her car.
"You two go on ahead. I'll join you after I drop him home."
A moving truck followed their car out of the complex.
Helena's heart pounded in time with the traffic lights as she frantically tried to come up with a reasonable explanation.
Julian was the first to break the strange silence, his voice flat.
"You don't have to be so tense. We agreed before we got married, didn't we? We'd keep it a secret from everyone but our parents, until we both felt it was the right time to go public. You're not ready now. I understand."
His gentle tone slowly calmed Helena's frayed nerves.
She took a deep breath, her voice tinged with gratitude.
"Thank you for understanding. Actually... I'm slowly getting used to being married. Just give me a little more time. I promise I'll go public."
Julian let out a barely audible "mm-hmm" and turned to look out the window.
*Married for three years and she still hasn't told anyone. And she needs more time.*
But he didn't want to wait anymore.
How much time does a person have in one lifetime to waste?
He was tired.
