Nathan stood at the door, backlit by the autumn sun which gave him a golden halo.
He opened his arms, smiling brightly. "Elena, the month is up. I'm back."
I didn't rush into his arms like previous years.
He frowned. "What's wrong? Still mad about the Aurora bracelet? That was just..."
"Just what?" I asked calmly. "Just a souvenir? Just a consolation prize?"
He walked into the apartment, looking around. "The place feels... emptier? Even the smell of your perfume is faint."
Then he saw the study—the door that used to be locked was wide open, and inside, it was completely empty.
"You're finally willing to let me see it?" He walked in excitedly, his tone teasing. "I thought you were hiding some big secret in here."
He didn't know that room used to be full of love letters.
The most romantic love letters in the world.
He was just too late.
"Why is it empty?" He turned to me, confused.
Because it's too late, Nathan. Seven years too late.
His phone rang, echoing in the empty room.
It was Victoria.
"Nathan, I took a whole bottle of sleeping pills..." Her voice was choked with sobs. "In twenty minutes, I'm going to die..."
Nathan's face changed drastically. "It's a matter of life and death, Elena. I have to go. This month has 31 days, so technically today doesn't count as breaking the rules."
"Wait for me. You have to wait for me!"
He rushed out without even looking back.
I smiled. Then, as I smiled, tears rolled down my face.
For her, he would fight for even one single day.
I dragged my suitcase out and handed the keys to the real estate agent.
Goodbye.
This place that held my entire youth.
