Waiting in the cold wind

Chapter 4

After leaving the Sutton house, I took the subway to the cheap eats street near the university.

With no degree and a criminal record, I managed to find a temp job at a burger joint.

The work was greasy, tedious, and exhausting, but it included one meal a day, which meant I wouldn't starve.

At the Sutton house, there was never a meal for me.

Ever since they found me at age twelve, they had given me a grand total of a hundred dollars. When I needed money for school fees or living expenses, they would sneer.

"Spoiled rotten as a child, and now you're just a lost cause. An ungrateful dog that can never be fed enough."

I never asked again.

I worked part-time jobs all through my school years, even taking shifts at illegal factories as a minor, sometimes not even getting paid.

As long as I could eat, I didn't care much about the pay. I just needed to survive.

Once, Seraphina was my only light.

She descended into my world like a goddess, protecting me, saving me from bullies, taking me out for meals.

The way she looked at me was something I had never seen anywhere else. I depended on her, trusted her unconditionally.

So much so that eleven years ago, when she fell gravely ill, I didn't hesitate to give her half of my liver.

The liver can regenerate, but the agonizing pain of the surgery and the scar on my stomach could never be erased.

But it didn't matter, as long as it saved her…

But all of that ended the moment she personally sent me to Albatross Island, the moment she stood with my family and let me take the blame.

Fifteen more days, and I'll never have to see her again. No one will ever be able to hurt me again…
