Chapter 6

What she was supposed to do?

Caelen looked at the woman he loved, feeling as though her gaze was carving his heart to pieces.

Fighting back tears, his lips trembling, he walked slowly toward her. “Was it what you were supposed to do, or what you wanted to do?”

“Julian’s love is so intense, isn’t it? He acts crazy for you, he’d throw his life away for you. You were moved, weren’t you? You’ve actually fallen for him, haven’t you?”

Liana’s lips tightened. She said nothing, her silence a mask of anger.

Her refusal to deny it was the final blow. Caelen’s heart turned to ash. “If that’s the case, why won’t you just divorce me?”

Her face darkened even further. “Why do you always bring up divorce? You’re clearly not calm yet. You need to stay here and reflect on your actions.”

She turned and walked away without a second glance.

Staring at her retreating back, Caelen’s heart felt like it had been plunged into an icy abyss.

They had been so in love since they were young… how had they ended up here?

He returned home alone and opened the closet—

*CRASH!*

A porcelain doll he treasured fell to the floor and shattered.

A pile of money spilled out from the broken pieces.

Caelen sank to the floor, looking at the shards, an overwhelming sadness washing over him.

This porcelain piggy bank was a gift Liana had handmade for him on his eighteenth birthday.

He’d been so happy when he received it. “From now on, whenever I’m happy, I’ll put some ‘love funds’ in here. If I’m unhappy, I’ll take some out. The day this piggy bank is empty, it means our story is over.”

“Don’t say such silly things!”

Back then, his casual mention of their story ending had terrified her. She’d hugged him tightly. “Caelen, our story will only end when we’re old and gray!”

“I’ll make sure your piggy bank is always full. After we’re married, I’ll never give you a reason to be sad enough to take money out of here.”

Caelen choked back the pain, gathering the scattered bills.

Ten-dollar bills, one-dollar bills, dimes, pennies…

Memories flooded back—

The first time Liana held his hand, when she formally visited his father with gifts, introducing herself as his partner. She had promised—

“Uncle Arthur, please entrust Caelen to me. I will take good care of him, cherish him, love him, spoil him, and always let him have his way!”

She took him to the movies. The tragic ending left him with red-rimmed eyes. He’d asked her in a panic, “If one day, someone like the other guy in the movie comes between us, someone who won’t leave you alone, would you waver?”

“Silly boy, of course not. I will only love you for the rest of my life.”

That night, she had kissed him for the first time.

They had so many memories.

Every single bill in that piggy bank represented a moment of joy Liana had once brought him…

Suddenly, a shard of porcelain sliced his hand. Red blood welled up instantly.

*Drip, drop.*

Tears mingled with the drops of blood.

He clutched the paper money, his voice raw, as if ground by sand. “Liana, you said you’d never let me be hurt… Why haven’t you come back yet?”

She had made those promises, word for word. But who was she with now?

Outside, the wind howled and the snow fell thick and fast.

Caelen was cold and in pain.

But this time, there was no one to hold him, no one to comfort him.

The person he was waiting for still hadn't returned.

Another sleepless night passed.

The next day, just as the sky began to lighten.

Caelen pulled himself together, hiding his exhaustion as he brought breakfast to the clinic.

He never expected to see police officers standing at the door to his father's room. “Mr. Rhodes, we’ve received a report that you’ve been embezzling workers’ wages. You need to come with us to the station for questioning.”
