Moonlight Drowned in the Lake

Chapter 4

On the day of the wedding, the chapel was split in two by a glass partition.

Serena's side was a spectacle of extravagance, filled with high-society guests.

My side was stark and empty, save for a few out-of-favor relatives.

I stood in the ready room, looking at my reflection. The wedding dress was an outdated model that didn't quite fit, but I didn't care.

The door opened and Serena walked in.

She was wearing a custom couture gown dripping with diamonds, looking like a proud peacock.

Elena, she said, her eyes raking over me with malice, I heard Silverlake didn't even send over the traditional pack token of acceptance I guess it makes sense. Who would bother for a mate who can't even shift into her wolf form

Maybe, I said calmly, adjusting my veil. But at least I'm marrying a whole man, not a beast on the verge of going insane.

Serena's face tightened before she sneered. What do you know Madmen have the most power. Once I cure Kaelan, I'll be the most powerful Luna in North America. And you You can go live in the slums with Lucas after he gets kicked out of his own family.

She leaned in close, her voice a venomous whisper. Don't forget, you're just my substitute. You're only getting this because I didn't want him.

I looked at her and suddenly felt a wave of pity.

Good luck, I said softly. I hope your 'cure' really works.

Serena huffed and spun around, storming out.

I touched my collarbone, where a red scratch mark stung from where she had intentionally dragged her nail.

Start the countdown, Serena. The countdown to the day you realize you're not a savior at all.
