No Longer His Caged Bird

Chapter 4

When Dante saw the bank statements, his face went completely white.

“Juliana, listen to me, I can explain…”

“Explain what?” I cut him off. “Explain how you used my money to pay for your mistress?”

“It’s not like that.” He shook his head frantically. “Isabella… her family was in trouble. I was just helping her out.”

“Helping her?” I was stunned by his shamelessness. “Dante, you took my money to help another woman, a woman you’re sleeping with, and you think that’s a valid excuse?”

“Juliana, calm down…”

“I am calm.” I put my phone away. “Dante, my lawyer will be in touch with you tomorrow. Get the divorce papers ready.”

I turned to leave, but he grabbed me.

“No, I won’t agree to a divorce.”

“You won’t agree?” I wrenched my arm free. “Dante, this isn’t about what you agree to anymore. It’s what I want.”

“Juliana, we’ve been married for three years. Are you just going to give up that easily?”

“Easily?” I laughed in his face. “Dante, you’re the one who gave up on our marriage, not me.”

“I didn’t give up. I love you.”

“Love me?” I pointed at him. “You love me, so you cheat? You love me, so you let me walk in on that? You love me, so you use my money on another woman?”

Dante had nothing to say.

“Dante, your love is cheap,” I said coldly. “And I can’t afford it.”

With that, I walked up the stairs without looking back.

I heard Dante’s voice behind me. “Juliana Rossi, you’ll regret this!”

I stopped and looked back at him. “Regret it? Dante, the only thing I regret is ever marrying you.”

Back in my studio, I collapsed onto the sofa.

Every conversation with Dante left me completely exhausted.

He was always trying to explain, but he could never explain anything.

What was worse, he still didn’t think he’d done anything wrong.

Helping Isabella?

Who helps someone by sleeping with them?

Who helps someone using their wife’s money?

I picked up my phone and sent a message to Ms. Hayes. “Ms. Hayes, please prepare to file for divorce immediately. He is not going to agree to settle this quietly.”

She replied quickly. “Understood. I’ll get on it right away.”

After handling that, I started to pack.

Since I had decided on a divorce, I needed to prepare for a long fight.

In the three years I had lived in the Moretti estate, I had left a lot of things there.

Personal items, work files, and some mementos.

I had to go back and get them.

But if I went now, I would definitely run into Dante.

I didn’t want to have anything to do with him anymore.

After thinking for a moment, I called the housekeeper, Maria.

Maria had been with the Moretti family for many years and was a kind woman.

“Maria, it’s me.”

“Ma’am, why haven’t you been home these past few days? The master has been waiting for you every day.”

“Maria, Dante and I are getting a divorce.”

There was silence on the other end of the line.

“Maria, are you still there?”

“Yes, yes.” Maria’s voice trembled slightly. “Ma’am, did you and the master have a misunderstanding?”

“It’s not a misunderstanding. He cheated on me.”

Maria was silent again.

“Maria, I want to ask you a question. Can you please answer me honestly?”

“Of course.”

“Does Isabella come to the house often?”

Maria hesitated. “Yes.”

“What did she do there?”

“Ma’am, I…”

“Maria, please tell me. I need to know the truth.”

Maria sighed. “Miss Isabella comes over often. Sometimes she stays the night. The master said she was his work assistant and that I should take good care of her.”

My heart was pierced again.

“Stays the night?”

“Yes, she has her own room. The guest room.”

“What else did she do?”

“Sometimes she would cook, saying she wanted to make the master his favorite dishes. Sometimes she would organize his clothes. Ma’am, I didn’t think it was appropriate, but the master said it was fine…”

I closed my eyes, fighting back tears.

Isabella wasn’t just sleeping with Dante; she was playing the role of the lady of the house in my home.

And I, the real lady of the house, was kept in the dark.

“Maria, thank you for telling me this.”

“Ma’am, please don’t be angry. Maybe there’s a misunderstanding…”

“There’s no misunderstanding, Maria,” I said, taking a deep breath. “I’m coming to pack my things tomorrow. If Dante is home, can you find a way to get him out of the house for me?”

“Well…”

“Maria, please, just this one last time.”

Maria was silent for a long time. “Alright, ma’am. Tomorrow at ten in the morning, the master has a meeting at the docks. You can come then.”

“Thank you, Maria.”

After hanging up, I finally broke down and cried.

Even the housekeeper knew what Isabella was doing in my house. The only one who didn't know was me, his wife.
