I had just got into the car when Ashley's voice came out: "Why do I hear the sound of a car door opening?"
"It's your sister-in-law, I came to help her pick a new wedding dress."
There was silence on the other side.
"Ashley?" Peyton asked.
"Peyton...my car broke down..."
I saw Peyton's hand on the steering wheel suddenly tighten.
"Peyton...the car just broke down, and it's so dark ahead...I'm so scared..."
Just as Peyton was about to say something, I spoke: "Take me back first."
Peyton was taken aback, and I turned my head: "I won't stop you from going to her, but you brought me out, and now you should take me home first."
"Peyton! I'm so scared!"
Ashley on the other end of the phone seemed to be crying.
I took the phone directly: "Miss Carter, even if your car breaks down, you can turn on the lights. It only takes a few minutes to get from here to my house, so you can keep the lights on and you won't have to wait long..."
"Hailey!"
Peyton grabbed the phone back, looking at me in disbelief. "You know Ashley is afraid of the dark! What do you mean by making her wait there alone after I take you home! Didn't I buy you a new wedding dress? Why are you getting so jealous in a situation like this!"
"I'm not jealous."
I didn't panic: "You can't get a cab here, and there are no street lights. It's not convenient for me to go back alone. There was just an armed robbery here two months ago..."
"Peyton!"
The other side turned to crying, "I'm scared!"
Peyton's breathing was unsteady, and he opened my car door with a snap, releasing my seat belt: "You're getting more and more unreasonable, get out and cool down!"
The car sped away in front of me.
When I left, he didn't give me a chance to change clothes, and I only had a coat to keep me warm.
The wind in the cold winter months made me tremble.
In the end, it was my best friend, Zoe, who drove a long way to pick me up from the dark alley without streetlights.
"Didn't there just used to be a murder case here? He just left you here?"
Zoe scolded as she drove.
I told her not to get angry, and sneezed while wrapping myself in the blanket she brought me.
I opened my phone and Ashley's Instagram was updated.
She was also wrapped in a HelloKitty blanket, leaning on Peyton who seemed to be asleep, with almond eyes as agile as a fawn: "Thank you to my great hero, you will always be the one who stands behind me when I turn around."
I showed my social media to my best friend, Zoe.
"Look, her blanket isn't as pretty as yours."
Zoe was stunned.
I had broken down for Peyton so many times, and she thought she would be comforting me all night this time, but I unexpectedly started teasing her.
She paused, then scoffed: "Of course, you should look at who it belongs to!"
