Back in the light: The conspiracy on the day of release

Chapter 3

How do you make a wicked person suffer and despair?

You stick the needle right where they can see it, so they can feel every bit of the panic and fear.

I had the hotel staff bring me a mountain of expensive skincare products to use as a cover.

For a month, I barely left the hotel.

I had money, and the hotel was more than happy to cater to a guest like me.

Grayson, for all his wealth, couldn’t pry into the private life of a presidential suite guest through the hotel.

He clearly had no idea that Ava's grandfather had left his granddaughter such a fortune.

I got a new phone number, so no one knew how to reach me.

For nearly a month, I used my power to reshape this body.

When I opened the door in my silk robe that day, the room service attendant nearly dropped the tray in her hands.

I saw the pure, unadulterated shock and awe in her eyes.

A month ago, I was a walking skeleton, my features gaunt and sunken.

Now, I had restored Ava to her former glory.

She had always been beautiful, once hailed as the belle of New York City.

But as a demon, I added a touch of otherworldly, mysterious allure that no human could possess.

The attendant stared at me, her professional training failing her as she stammered.

“Your… your coffee, ma’am.”

I let out a soft laugh. “Just put it there.”

My voice was like a velvet-coated melody, sending a pleasant shiver down her spine.

As the attendant left, she couldn’t tear her eyes away from me.

She closed the door behind her, her mind still reeling.

This guest was so unbelievably beautiful.

And she’d been in the hotel this whole month!

Strangely enough, the attendant seemed to have forgotten what Ava looked like when she first checked in a month ago.

Back in the room, I made a call to a well-known director.

The moment I saw a face, I knew their life story.

He was about to start filming Legacy of Ash, a massive epic led by a powerful female protagonist.

It was also the ambitious project Isla was using to break into high-end television.

Grayson was the producer, Isla was the star, and the director had won international awards.

He wielded a lot of power and had his own connections.

Even someone like Isla had to treat him with respect.

I got straight to the point. “I want the part of Morrigan in Legacy of Ash.”

The sound of my voice made the great director, Julian Croft, pause.

When he processed what I’d said, he let out a cold laugh. “Who the hell do you think you are? Some little starlet with a big ego? Let me tell you something, even an Oscar winner has to audition for me.”

Oh?

So Isla didn’t just waltz in through the back door?

“You have a son,” I said lazily. “He’s ten years old, living abroad. I even know which boarding school in Switzerland he attends. Do I need to inform your wife?”

This child, of course, was not his wife’s.

Julian had married into money. His wife’s family was immensely powerful, the kind even Grayson Vance wouldn’t want to cross.

If this got out, Julian Croft would simply… disappear from the face of the earth.

There was a long silence on the other end.

I could hear his heavy, ragged breathing, a clear sign of his fury.

A minute later, Julian’s voice came back, hoarse. “You at least have to be beautiful. This role… she has to outshine Isla Vance.”

He was deliberately setting the bar high.

In Hollywood, how many actresses could truly outshine Isla?

“Next week. Come to the address I send you. We’ll sign the contract.”

I chuckled softly. “Julian, don’t try to play games with me. It’s not that you can’t touch me—it's that if anything happens to me, an email with all the evidence will be sent automatically to your wife’s phone.”

Of course, I was bluffing.

He had no power whatsoever against a demon.

Julian gritted his teeth, texted a new address, and slammed the phone down.
