The elevator in the mall broke down.
Of all the luck, I was stuck with some young, pretty pregnant woman.
No sooner were we rescued than she was on the phone, all weepy, to her husband.
She was practically purring into the phone, "Honey, you gotta come quick! My tummy hurts!"
Her husband showed up before the ambulance even got there.
But, holy crap, the guy looked exactly like my husband, Jake. You know, the one who'd given me a kiss goodbye that morning.
Seriously, did this woman and I just husband-swap without realizing it?
...
Jake came barreling in, still in his pajamas and slippers.
He was all out of breath and flustered, which isn't like him at all. He's usually so calm. I saw beads of sweat on his forehead.
He must have been terrified and booked it out the door without even changing.
I figured the mall had called him, letting him know I was involved in the elevator mishap.
I was just about to call out his name when he blew right past me and headed straight for the preggo.
She launched herself into his arms, tears already streaming down her face.
"Oh, Jake! Jake, you're here! I was so scared!"
Her voice was all soft and fragile. Even I felt a little sorry for her.
"Are you hurt? Is the baby okay?"
Jake checked her over from head to toe, looking totally freaked out.
It would have been touching if it weren't my husband with another woman.
I didn’t want to believe it, but there he was, holding this woman and whispering sweet nothings.
The same Jake who swore he loved me that morning.
My devoted, one-woman-man husband was cheating. He was having a baby with his side chick. And I had no clue.
It felt like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water on me. The joy I had just felt from learning I was pregnant vanished instantly.
I felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen.
I frowned a little, about to call out to Jake.
"Honey, I… I'm having cramps!"
Before I could even get the words out, the woman in Jake's arms gasped, going pale.
Jake went white as a sheet. He scooped her up like she was made of glass.
"Take care of everything here, Bill. I've gotta get Ashley to the hospital."
He barked the order at his secretary, who'd come with him, and practically sprinted out.
The whole time, Jake only had eyes for Ashley. He didn't even glance around.
He didn't see his wife of seven years, another victim of the elevator breakdown.
Jake left, and the secretary was left to handle things with the mall staff.
The gawkers dispersed, revealing me standing off to the side.
"Mrs. Thompson? What are you doing here?"
The secretary, Bill, looked guilty when he saw me, and the mall manager who was with me.
He realized I'd been in the elevator too.
Bill stared at my purse on the bench, avoiding eye contact.
I followed his gaze and felt a wave of bitterness.
Jake had given me that purse for our seventh anniversary. He said it was "so me."
It had been sitting right next to Ashley, and Jake hadn't even noticed it.
Of course not. He was too busy being concerned for the young, beautiful woman carrying his child. He couldn't see anyone else.
He was so worried, just like he always was when I was sick.
I had naively believed in our love, thinking he was devoted to me.
But today, I realized a man's heart can hold a lot of people.
He can spread his love around, giving some to you, and some to someone else.
