He rushes to his first love, I embrace a new life

Chapter 5

When Sarah showed up, Cole and I were lying on opposite sides of the bed, a hand's-width of empty space between us.

"Cole, Katie has a fever. I… I don't know what to do."

Sarah looked frantic, but her stylish trench coat, her red dress, and even the loose strands of hair framing her face all screamed of a woman who had taken great care with her appearance.

"Wait for me, I'll be right there."

Cole didn't even grab a scarf, just threw on a jacket and rushed towards the door.

Sarah looked at him, and even reached out to fix the collar of his coat for him.

She glanced up at me, her eyes filled with a veiled taunt and a hint of victory.

Just as Cole was about to leave, she hesitated and pulled on his sleeve.

"What's wrong?" Cole asked, confused.

Sarah looked at me hesitantly, her eyes full of struggle.

"I… never mind. I'm afraid Lucy will get the wrong idea again…"

She looked from me to Cole, tears welling up in her eyes, then bit her lip and turned to leave.

"Hey, Sarah!"

Cole called out, turning to chase after her.

But then he seemed to remember something, and he turned back to look at me.

I leaned against the doorframe with my arms crossed, watching their little drama unfold.

Cole's face was a mask of conflict, but he finally looked at me, his cheeks flushed.

"Katie's sick. I have to go check on them."

I smirked. "You just told me that when someone's sick, they should see a doctor. You're not a doctor. What are you going to do?"

"Go over there and play daddy?"

Cole's face turned beet red, and he looked at me, furious and embarrassed. "What kind of thing is that to say?! Look at what you've become!"

"Don't you have any compassion? Sarah's a single mother, think how hard this must be for her. Do you even have a heart?"

Done with his tirade, Cole kicked the door as if to release his frustration.

I watched the door swing back and forth on its hinges and let a cold smile touch my lips.

"Cole, from now on, I'm not getting involved in anything to do with you and that woman."

"You want to give her half your paycheck, go ahead. You want to play house and be a father figure to her kid, be my guest. From now on, your life has nothing to do with me."

Cole looked at me and opened his mouth to say something.

But I had already turned and walked back into the room.

A moment later, I heard Cole's voice from the window. "I'm just really worried. I have to go check. You go to sleep. I'll be back soon."

I watched his shadow disappear from the window, feeling nothing at all, and reached into a drawer to pull out an old metal cookie tin.

Inside was every penny we had saved during our marriage.

Go ahead, Cole.

Go.

I'm done with you.
