See? This is the woman I've shared my life with for nearly a decade.
The secrets I once shared with her have now become knives, twisted into my most vulnerable spots.
I curled up in the car, my vision turning black. I almost didn't make it.
Thankfully, my emergency pills were within reach. I took them, and my life was spared.
If it weren't for my son, I would have just turned the car around and left for good.
Whatever Seraphina did to me was between us. But a child shouldn't have to pay for the mistakes of adults. I won't let my son grow up without a father.
When I finally arrived at the Prescott estate, I was stopped at the gate.
The butler looked me up and down, as if he didn't recognize me, the son-in-law of the family.
He waved his hand, and several masked security guards sprayed me down with disinfectant, as if I were carrying a plague.
After that, the butler questioned me for what felt like an eternity, toying with me until he was satisfied, before finally letting me in.
As soon as I stepped into the yard, I saw Jace with his arm around my wife. They were sitting together, and my son was nestled between them, playing happily.
My wife saw me but ignored me. She probably didn't want me to disturb their perfect family moment.
My mother-in-law was sitting nearby, smiling from ear to ear, as if this was a perfectly normal sight.
But the moment she saw me walking toward Leo, her smile vanished.
"Caleb! Have you forgotten all your manners? You don't even greet your mother when you come home?"
Jace, holding Leo, added fuel to the fire with a smile.
"Maybe Caleb is still mad at me. I accidentally cut him off earlier. It's my fault, my driving isn't very good. Don't be too hard on him, Mom."
His driving isn't very good?
His driving skills are on the same level as his acting skills: world-class.
My mother-in-law started lecturing Leo.
"Don't you ever be like your father. He's got all the bad habits of a low-class person. He never does anything useful, just gets jealous over every little thing. So petty. He's not even a real man."
I ignored my mother-in-law and walked straight toward my son. No matter what they did, Leo was the only thing that mattered to me.
But as I reached out to hug him, he slapped my hand away.
"Don't touch me! You're dirty! I like Daddy Jace!"
My hand froze in mid-air. I fought back the grief and rage. In that moment, the pain in my heart was worse than any heart attack.
I saw the mocking smile on Jace's face, and it felt like a hole had been punched right through my soul.
Eight years. I had put up with this for eight long, miserable years.
For my wife, I gave up my career and my future. Now, not only had I lost my wife, but I had also lost my son. I had absolutely nothing.
Leo's words shattered my last shred of hope.
I couldn't take it anymore.
