Brad didn't agree to a divorce.
It wasn't about feelings.
After so many years of marriage, our interests had been so intertwined. Divorce would be a massive blow to him. Dividing the assets would also affect the company going public. Apart from becoming single again, there was no advantage for him.
Brad was a great businessman.
He won't do anything that is bad for him. So, he chose to ignore it.
Just as he'd ignored my hysterics in the past. This time, he ignored my requests, my lawyer's divorce agreement, and the asset division.
I didn't intend to get into a tug-of-war with him.
I just let the lawyer tell Brad that if he wouldn't agree to the divorce, I would sue him.
Then, I packed my bags and left the city.
Moments before the plane took off, I got a text from Brad.
【Stella, you know this is the most important time for the company to go public, so why are you making such a fuss?
【Have we really come to this point after so many years?】
I thought about it and replied.
【Yes.】
The plane's destination was Iceland.
At the meeting point of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, I lived in a seaside town where you could see the sea when you opened the window.
Further south, I saw the red house that tested your eyesight in the green grass.
I knew that it really existed.
The wind blew, and the grass blades swayed.
How beautiful.
I joined a tour group. The tour guide was an Asian woman. She knew how to introduce the sights and the food with great precision.
In the tour group was a young couple.
They were always very affectionate, and their relationship was excellent.
I once saw the boy practicing the proposal speech. He went from being clumsy to being good at it in three days.
Then, the boy proposed to the girl in the Roman temple, in a sea of roses.
"Chloe, will you marry me?"
He practiced so many times, but his words were not as good as the first time.
Clumsy, trembling, but sincere.
"I do."
The girl accepted the ring with tears in her eyes. She ran into the boy's arms.
The two hugged tightly.
Under the petals, it was as if they had embraced the whole world.
On the way back, the boy was packing for the girl. The girl sat beside me. She touched the diamond ring on her finger. She asked me.
"Sister, did you get married?"
"Yes."
The girl was a natural, and when she heard that I had been through the same thing, she got excited. "Sister, how old were you when you got married? I just started working this year. Was it too early to accept the proposal?"
She was young.
Her eyes were filled with anticipation for the future, the admiration for the person she loved, and the anxiety about marriage.
She was worried about choosing the wrong person and taking the wrong path.
Unlike me.
I chose Brad in my youth, and I believed that love could overcome all difficulties.
But I later realized that all difficulties were caused by love, and all the harm and tears came from marriage.
My marriage was undoubtedly a failure.
So, I'm not in a position to give her some motivational speeches or love advice.
I only told her.
"I got married at the age of twenty-three. Now, I'm thirty-two and preparing for a divorce.
"To me, marriage has nothing to do with age. Be together if you like each other. Break up if you don't. Be pure and simple."
The girl nodded in confusion. She carefully asked, "Is it because you don't love him that you're getting divorced?"
I smiled and nodded:
"Yes, we hated each other."
