Chapter 3

After leaving the Mayer house, Serena looked at me with disdain. “Oh, you got beat up this time.”

I knew she was laughing at me.

I didn't say anything, but looked straight ahead.

Serena said, “Alex, you’re really useless, don’t you know how to fight back?”

I imitated her tone, “I’m useless, I can’t even manage my own wife.”

That sentence made her speechless for a moment.

After a while, she was annoyed, “You're useless, you can’t control me, so you deserve to be punished.”

Everyone thought it was my problem, that I couldn’t control Serena.

But her heart was somewhere else; how could I pull her back?

I suddenly felt tired.

I didn't know when this debt would be paid.

Serena got out of the car in the middle of the ride, saying, “Being with you is too depressing.”

I didn't mind. She'd always been like that over the years.

There was nothing Serena wouldn't do.

At our wedding, she’d left me without hesitation and run away.

And then, the video of her drinking with a man in a bar spread all over the internet.

In the end, her parents brought her back.

After she was brought back, Serena glared at me fiercely. “Don't think you can control me. Our marriage is destined to be just a transaction.”

Yes, our marriage wasn’t only a transaction, but a joke.

When I got home, the hospital called, saying my grandmother’s condition wasn't good, and I had to go there immediately.

My heart skipped a beat, and I rushed to the hospital.

I ran through several red lights.

In the hospital room, the person lying in the bed looked thin, and her cheeks were sunken, groaning in pain.

My eyes immediately turned red, aching.

“Why did this happen?”

Everything had been fine before, so why was it suddenly so serious?

Before, Grandma used to tease me, waiting to have a grandchild.

The doctor beside me hurriedly said, “She saw the news on television yesterday and was very upset…”

My heart felt like it was blocked.

I had been pretending to be happy.

Over the years, I had been creating an image of a happy life for my grandmother.

I always told her that Serena was busy, and if she had time, she would come see her.

But Serena had never come.

My lies had been exposed.

Grandma struggled and called out to me, “Alex, I'm sorry.”

I knelt by the bedside and held her thin hand.

“Grandma.”

Her eyes were filled with tears.

“It’s all my fault. If it wasn’t for me and the Mayers arranging your engagement, you wouldn’t be this unhappy.”

As she spoke, she started to cough violently.

I hurriedly patted her back, my voice choked with emotion, “Grandma, don’t talk.”

“Serena’s parents didn't look down on us; they thought we were trying to climb up, and Serena is also doing this to you, aren't you having a hard time?” Tears were already streaking across my face and onto the sheets.

I shook my head desperately, “I’m fine.”

After my parents passed away, Grandma had been worried about me.

She was afraid that I wouldn't be happy, and she was afraid that I wouldn’t manage the company well.

So, she was anxious and got sick.

This time, she was so stimulated.

I didn’t know how to keep telling this lie.

At this moment, Grandma suddenly said, “Alex, can you ask Serena to come?”

Seeing her pleading eyes, I couldn’t bear to refuse.

I held back my tears and agreed.
