The next morning, Bethany came back, and she was very tired.
I was going to work.
I took the keys from her and didn't say anything.
"Carter, it was really dangerous last night, if I hadn't got there, Cody would have died."
"I'm so sorry, I'll take you to dinner tonight!"
I shook my head calmly, "No, I'm fine."
She hugged me from behind.
"Carter, I love you, and I only love you. Don't be so cold and cruel, okay?"
"Let's get married, and I'll pick the date. Will you stay?"
"I don't want you to leave me, how will I survive?"
Bethany was crying and holding me tightly.
I knew, I would grow soft again.
I turned and wiped away her tears.
"Okay, I promise."
I looked at her tears. I had no choice.
But this time, it was the last chance!
That weekend, I wore the suit, and Bethany wore a pretty dress.
Bethany left her phone at home.
I was relieved, that maybe she still loved me.
We were quiet all the way to the courthouse.
At the courthouse, my phone rang.
It was Cody. He was sending me a message, and wanted to see Bethany one last time.
If he saw her, he would leave this world.
I laughed. I didn't believe that.
It was finally our turn.
