A San Luis Obispo County resident has died from complications of the flu, the County Public Health Department announced on Wednesday.

Health officials say the resident was over the age of 60 and had several underlying conditions.

There has reportedly been a recent increase in laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza locally. However, since health care providers are not required to report all cases of influenza, the health department doesn’t track the exact numbers of cases.

Health officials say most of the cases that have been confirmed in San Luis Obispo County this winter have been the same strain of H1N1 that was predominant in 2009.

H1N1 is covered in this year’s flu vaccine, which you can get from your doctor, many local pharmacies and the Public Health Department.
