Trending News: David Beckham Used to Steal His Wife’s Beauty Products
Ever sneaked a bit of your partner’s grooming products? David Beckham has, and he’s not afraid to say it.
In an interview with Into the Gloss, the 43-year-old soccer legend revealed how he got interested in style and started taking care of his hair and skin — and it involved a slight bit of theft.
Steal It Like Beckham
Whether Beckham was playing for Manchester United in England, Real Madrid in Spain, or the Los Angeles Galaxy, he had an image to uphold. And while there’s nothing wrong with jacking someone’s style to look a certain way, the soccer player did the jacking part from his own Spice Girl, wife Victoria.
“My approach to grooming was always to steal my wife’s products. That was kind of it, really. I’d always been aware of how I wanted my hair to look, stuff like that, but I was also in a career where I was always outside—whether I was living in Manchester, living in Madrid, LA…all these different places with different weather,” he told Into the Gloss. “I had to take care of my skin because of that, but the way I looked after it was to steal my wife’s stuff, because I know she has the best.”
The Famous Mohawk
Beckham said when he was in his playing heyday, taking chances on men’s style wasn’t really a thing. He didn’t care, and rocked his famous “mohawk” hairstyle as well as those forgettable cornrows. Yet again, the inspiration for his style came from a woman, his mother.
“My mum was a hairdresser — actually, she was part of the spike, which was one of my first hairstyles,” he said in the interview. “It felt like an era when people didn’t really take risks, which is probably why my mohawk didn’t go over all that well, I suppose. People didn’t really accept that one. But that’s probably the one people talked about the most. Other than the cornrows.”
These days, Beckham is no longer getting style and grooming inspiration from the women in his life. Earlier this year, he launched his own men’s grooming company, House 99, which features products such as pomade, a tattoo moisturizing cream, and a face scrub.
“For me, grooming is not only about how you look, but how you feel. It’s about being comfortable, trying new things and shaping your next look,” Beckham said in a March press release. “I created House 99 to give people the inspiration as well as the right products to experiment and feel completely at home doing so. House 99 is here to support men, to give them the tools they need to create whatever look they are going for.”
As for whether Beckham is going to start anymore against-the-grain style trends, don’t bet on it. He insisted to In the Gloss: “I’m 43 years old and I can’t do what I used to do when I was 23!”
